Epidaurus is the most important ancient site of worship dedicated to the god Asclepius. The city was located where today we find Pidavros or Palaia Epidaurus (Ancient Epidaurus), about 13 kilometers from its Asclepieion (healing sanctuary). The sanctuary itself is found near the present-day town of Lygourio (Municipality of Asklipieio, Municipality of Epidaurus) in the Peloponnese, in the Argolis region — approximately 30 km from the city of Nafplio, 20 km from Nea Epidaurus, and about 13 km from Palaia Epidaurus.
Since 1988, it has been part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
